The house I'm living in used to be my dad's and he had Comcast triple play. I don't need the phone service, so after he moved out and I moved in, I signed up for Comcast service in my name and bought a Motorola SB6141, white, from Amazon to avoid the modem lease fees. We're signed up for the 50/10 service.
It worked OK to start, but then the speeds dropped dramatically. Using speedtest.comcast.net, I'm getting anywhere from 0.5 to 2 Mbps down, but always around 11 Mb up. A tech came out to the house, and according to my wife, the signal he measured from the coax going into the cable mdem was very poor. The tech placed an order for a new drop from the pole to the house.
That new conduit was just installed, but I'm seeing the same speed issues. There's only splitter between the box on the side of the house and the cable modem, for the one TV box. The cable TV has worked well from the beginning.
My downstream power level is -3 to -4dBmV, and my upstream power level is 49-50dBmV.
I'm at a loss now, but reading through these forums and others has given me a couple of ideas. Maybe there's a bad amplifier somewhere in the neighborhood, or maybe the SB 6141 modem itself is behaving badly with Comcast's network down here (Southwest Florida). I read one thread where someone had luck with a similar problem by replacing the modem with a Zoom 5341J. But should I try to replace the modem first, or should I call Comcast and have them troubleshoot the line further?
