Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Firefox 26.0
Gigabyte Motherboard GA-890GPA-UD3H
Long story, but you folks usually want all of the details. In short, my best guess is that something happened when I clicked on Realtek Ethernet diagnostic utility. But, it could have been the Windows Update.
On New Years morning the first thing I did was a Windows Update, and had the machine restart. After restart, I was about to do my normal thing of shutting down and restarting again. But, before I did that, I clicked on Realtek Ethernet diagnostic utility. It’s widow came up with no information on it, and it sat there for a minute doing nothing. I clicked it off. I've clicked on that thing in the pass, and it never has done anything.
After clicking off that utility, I shut down completely and restarted. I then started Firefox, which goes to my Gmail. I opened my main Gmail account, which opened unusually quickly I think. I then went to open my second Gmail account, and it would not open. Blue bar stops 80% of the way. It will open if I clicked on open in basic HTML. I clicked off the second account and found that the main account had a little window saying that not all Gmail features had loaded. That little window says ‘learn more,’ a troubleshooting guide. The first thing it suggests is a ‘flaky’ network connection. It goes on about unstable browser, anti-virus, firewall etc.
Even if I try to open only my main Gmail account, it will open, but after about 30 seconds it will say not all features have loaded. Some parts of Gmail will work very slowly, or not at all.
I messed around with shutting down and restarting, trying to get Gmail to open with no errors, but had no success.
I restored my computer to the restore point set by Windows Update. No help.
I un-installed all of the updates that Windows Updater said I had install on this day. No help.
The only Realtek things I can find on my computer are:
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (RTL8167)
Realtek HD Audio Manager
Realtek Folder
Audio
Diagnostic Utility
NICDRV_8169
A search on the computer will show the word Realtek appearing in a number of places.
I did find new versions of Realtek Ethernet diagnostic on the net, but I wasn’t sure they applied to my Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (RTL8167), and did not download them.
I used Windows 7 to test the Network Adapter. It said the device appears to be configured properly, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding.
I have tried to get Comcast on the phone to see if they can diagnos the problem, but no luck there.
I have set Internet Protocol Version 4 to what Comcast web page says is for Illinois:
Obtain IP address automatically
Preferred DNS 68.87.72.130
Alternate DNS 68.87.77.130
Internet Protocol Version 6
Obtain IPv6 automatically
Preferred DNS 2001:558:100E:4:68:87:72:130
Alternate DNS 2001:558:1016:C:68:87:77:130
I turned off Windows Firewall. No help.
I turned off Microsoft Essentials. No help.
Internet connection speed tests fine.
I’ve noticed that some web pages don’t look proper. Things are jumbled up. Amazon’s main page looks fine, but the top of the item pages are jumbled. Some things, such as my Gmail contacts list, open very slowly. A few things on Gmail or other web pages, I've waited for a minute and they didn't open at all.
Hope someone can help.
Thank you,
Harry
