I've been using my own Motorola Surfboard modem with Comcast Xfinity internet for the past 18 months or so. I recently moved to a new address. Everything works fine for approximately two weeks.
Then, last Saturday, I'm no longer able to get online. My modem tells me it's "Online." I call the customer support, and they send a refresh signal and we confirm the Mac address. Still no luck. We arrange for a technician to visit our home and check out the connection.
Interestingly, on the morning the technician came, I am able to successfully get online, but only as far as the "Authorize your account with Comcast" page. I enter my login info, and it tells me that I'm not set up for "self-authorization" or something like that. Anyways, the technician is here. He calls his guys to have them make sure my Modem is properly identified, working, and all that. No luck..
Finally, to experiment, the technician swaps out our modem with one of theirs, and voila! The internet works fine with this one. And so the conclusion was "Buy a new modem or continue to rent ours."
How does this make any sense at all? My modem works just fine. I'm even able to get online so far as the Comcast Account Authorization screen. But for one reason or another the people behind the scenes are unable to get my Modem past the authorization process.
