We just bought a house and moved in last week. Knowing that the previous owners had the house wired for Xfinity TV (and DSL for their internet), I ordered Performance Internet with the self-install kit, on the assumption that the wiring was already there so it would work fine. However, the modem reports that it cannot get an upstream channel at all, with the error "No ranging response received" (The same problem happens on my personal SB5120, as well as a Ubee rental from the CC service center). It gets a downstream chanel just fine, with apparently normal signal numbers; it's just the upstream that's bad. So as far as I can deduce, the problem could be one of three things:
1. The modem did not receive the activation signal and therefore is not acknowledged by the network
2. Since the house has not had cable internet before, there's some kind of "INTERNET ON/OFF" switch that needs to be flipped by a tech (does this exist? am I just making this up?)
3. There's some piece of infrastructure missing between the wall jack and the service box. Can't imagine what; the wire is already there and looks like it was recently installed.
