Incorrect Modem Setting

I currently have the Starter XF Double Play package that says I should have internet speeds up to 50mbps.  I realize I may not  get the full 50mbps, but when running the xfinity test, I only get 2.96mbps.  Is there a way I can check to make sure my modem is on the correct setting or how can I at least get decently fast speeds?  My modem is a Motorola sb5101u.
