Can still use SB5101 after EOL date?

I have a Motrola SB5101 which works great.  I have a minimal Comcast internet service, I think it's called performance starter, but not sure.  I was told the top speed on this tier is 12 Mbps, I'm getting 10 Mbps with the SB5101.  When I started the service the modem was listed as ok for docsys2.  Now that modem is on the EOL list.  I can get an refurbished Arris docsys 3.0 modem for $35 if I have to.

In the past, when I tried to register an old gateway with docsys 1.0 on it, they would not allow it.  I am wondering if that will happen when the EOL date arrives for docsys 2.0

I'm wondering, do I really need to upgrade?
My service won't go above 12 Mbps, do I really need a docsys 3.0?
Is it just no support, or does EOL mean it'll stop working with Comcast soon (EOL date is 4/14).

I'd rather not buy one; if there's no huge performance benefit, or is not necessary for continued use.
Thanks in advance.
